About The Designer Bruce Burdick

Bruce Burdick (1933-2021) was an influential American designer known for his innovative furniture and exhibit designs. Born and raised in Pasadena, California, Burdick studied at the University of Southern California and the Art Center College of Design[1][4].

During his time at USC, Burdick had the opportunity to intern at the Eames Office in Los Angeles, where he worked with renowned designers Charles and Ray Eames. This experience would prove to be a significant inspiration throughout his career[1].

After graduating from Art Center in 1961, Burdick worked with notable designers John Follis and Herb Rosenthal in Los Angeles. In 1970, he founded his own design firm, the Burdick Group, which initially operated in Los Angeles before relocating to San Francisco in 1975[1].

 Career Highlights

Furniture Design: Burdick is perhaps best known for creating the Burdick Group modular desk system for Herman Miller in 1980. This innovative system featured a unique assemblage of work surfaces, storage elements, and electronic equipment supports that could be configured to suit individual work styles[4]. The design received awards from the Institute of Business Designers and the Industrial Designers Society of America, and was named one of the Best of 1981 for Industrial Design by Time magazine[3][4].

Exhibit Design: Burdick designed numerous museum exhibits worldwide, including spaces for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Derby Museum, and the California Science Center. He was a pioneer in incorporating computer technology into exhibits, creating interactive displays on topics such as economics and nutrition for the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago[1][4].

Education: In 1971, Burdick founded the department of Environmental Design at the Art Center College of Design, which he directed until 1975[1].

Throughout his career, Burdick was an advocate for industrial design, emphasizing its impact on everyday life. He continued to work on various projects until 2000, when he and his wife Susan dissolved their firm to focus on travel. Bruce Burdick passed away in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of innovative design that continues to influence the field today[1][7].
